Italian artists Mirco Pagano and Moreno De Turco have used a total of 6,500 CDs in order to create mosaic works of art of seven musical icons using the artists’ own CDs. The project is called “Piracy” and depicts famous artists laying dead, killed by the “virus of piracy” (well…video killed the radio star, but the internet killed the music, film and digital industry, but that’s a whole other topic). Famous musicians in the series include Jim Morrison, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, James Brown, Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Markley and Elvis Presley. The works for each musician were made from the musician’s own CDs featuring some of the music industry’s most influential songs and albums. The artists took the project one step forward by creating stop-motion video of each artists actively dying as he is infected by the “virus of piracy”.

This collection is so awesome, we love how powerful the message is and how the artists chose to express themselves through both video and photography to address piracy. The CD mosaics were installed in a gallery setting and the video of each musician dying accompanied the works.
Seeing the musicians die (or at least their CD-mosaic selves) in video amplifies the message of the entire project, don’t you think? We do. It’s like, whoa, powerful.
